Universal Health & Safety is looking to expand its team of Safety Instructors. The successful candidates will be quick learners with excellent public speaking skills, a background in adult education, and experience with occupational health and safety training.

We prefer someone who is already teaching safety courses, but we are willing to train the right person; train-the-trainer education, instructor shadowing, and co-teaching sessions. Experience working within the construction, manufacturing, or workplace safety industry is preferred. Our ideal candidates come with industry experience and can facilitate one or more of our core programs.

Please note this position includes occasional Saturday and evening work requirements. All of our Instructors are equipped with all of the required training materials and technology, and report into the Operations Manager.

Responsibilities

Do you love to teach? Does helping someone succeed at a new task get you excited? Then you will love being a Safety Instructor! What does a Safety Instructor do? The Safety Instructor has the important responsibility of teaching workers a variety of safety courses to ensure they are working at a maximum level of safety. This means that you work with our clients in a teaching capacity to deliver the necessary theoretical knowledge in class as well as any hands-on portions required.  This is not a position for someone who likes to sit at a desk. You will be on the go traveling to customer sites training employees in their own work environment, while building strong working relationships with your customer base.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience facilitating safety training courses or other Adult education certification or Adult teaching experience; 100+ hrs experience delivering Adult education courses in the last 5 years OR Train the Trainer certificate
  • A degree, diploma or certificate in occupational health and safety from a recognized post-secondary institution OR at least two years industry experience in either operations or maintenance
  • Excellent knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act and applicable Regulations
  • Bonus Points if you have experience conducting training workshops (i.e. Joint Health and Safety Committee training, Working at Heights, Forklift, Spill Response, Confined Space, Due Diligence) or have Certifications in First Aid, Fall Protection, and Confined Space.
  • Preference will be given to those with a facilitators certificate.
  • Have the ability to interpret, evaluate and apply regulations, policies and procedures to a wide variety of work situations and jurisdictions.
  • Willingness and ability to learn and present new material; Professional classroom and participant management skills
  • Verifiable and valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License; ability to travel to clients’ sites when required
  • Flexibility in work schedule; working nights and weekends, on occasion

  • Strong communication skills, able to interact and direct personnel in a class setting, ie. public speaking and customer service skills
  • A verifiable Clean Driving Record; able to pass criminal record check; willing to successfully complete and comply with a drug and alcohol test; for certain clients a criminal record check and drug test may be required.
  • The ability to maintain a clean and welcoming learning environment; responsible for preparing for daily delivery of courses
  • The ability to multi-task; responsible for the inventory of course materials to ensure adequate supplies are available for all courses.
  • Attention to Detail; prepare, administer, and mark tests (accuracy and completeness of course records).
  • The ability to work independently and in a team environment; participate in course development initiatives and assist other team members with various projects to ensure the business is responsive to the needs of clients.
